Stress can affect people in different ways. The Health and Safety Executive explains that when pressure is hard to manage, it often shows up through clear and recognisable changes.
Some signs are physical. These can include muscle tension, tiredness, headaches, poor sleep, or frequent minor aches. Emotional signs may include feeling low, anxious, overwhelmed, or easily irritated.
Stress can also affect how we think and behave. You may notice difficulty concentrating, indecision, withdrawal from others, working longer hours, or avoiding tasks. These are common responses to pressure. They are signals, not personal failings.
Pause and reflect
You might like to take a moment to notice any patterns you recognise. Have you seen changes in your energy, mood, sleep, focus or behaviour? Do these signs show up at certain times or around certain situations? Recognising patterns helps you understand what may need attention next.
