Stress at work

Stress at work is not about people being weak or unable to cope. The Health and Safety Executive explains that work related stress arises when demands exceed a person’s ability to cope with the support and resources available.

Pressures at work can come from workload, deadlines, unclear roles, low control, or poor communication. Relationships, change, and lack of support can also play a role. These factors often interact rather than appear on their own.

Because stress is linked to how work is designed and managed, it can be reduced. Understanding this shifts the focus from fixing individuals to improving systems, conversations, and ways of working.

Pause and reflect

You might like to take a moment to consider how work feels right now. Are job demands clear and manageable? Do you feel supported and able to influence how you work? Reflecting on these questions helps identify where stress may be coming from and what could help next.
